With a new name and a new album, Vast Capital (formerly A Bird of Passage) seems to have a new lease on life. Released to radio on March 30, 2004, the band's first single "Smile" is already in rotation on Triple A radio as far away as Punta Gorda, Florida. One of their songs from their latest CD has good reviews from a demo listening panel of 2004 SXSW and caught the
attention of Eddie Phoon, the event director of the USA Songwriting Competition.
Yet with all this change, there are some things that remain constant. Take, for instance, the four core members: Daryl Kikuchi, Ethan Anderson, Levi Ware and Steve Barci have been performing together for over three years; Kikuchi, Anderson and Ware have been writing songs since 1997. It's essentially the same band that made a name for itself under A Bird of Passage - just with a little more moxie. Vast Capital got a major boost of confidence in late March of 2004 at their CD release at the Tractor Tavern. In addition to selling out The Tractor in one hour, the band sold 85 copies of their album and garnered rave reviews. It was their second-straight sell-out concert.
The band now focuses on promoting their album What More Else … (A Bird of Passage Records) to the 'vast capitals' outside of their native Seattle.
In February of 2003, Vast Capital began pre-production on a third album and spent the better part of the next 10 months finishing up recording, mixing and mastering their latest release What More Else ….The album, which features 11 original songs was produced by Jon Blackstone (past sessions include work with Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson "Elton John" and co-writing sessions with famed Nashville writers Troy Seals and Margaret Becker. Engineered by Neal Cappellino (Nickel Creek, Alison Krause). String arranger/ composer John Mark Painter (Ben Folds, Sixpence None the Richer) and mastering by Steven Marcussen (Paul McCartney, Tom Petty).
